Rory McIlroy once said someone told him:
“Do you ever see a pool player take practice strokes before the shot?”
It stuck with him.
The idea is simple — get so good that when you step up, you already know what’s about to happen. No rehearsal needed. Just execution.
That’s the highest level: internal mastery.
It reminds me of Beethoven. He was deaf, yet composed masterpieces because he understood — deeply — how the music would sound before a single note was played.
But here’s the reality (at least for me):
I take a few practice swings before hitting… brushing the grass, syncing up the swing and the length of that particular club, before I hit it. I deliberately try to brush the grass and hit the same sect of grass twice in a row before hitting the ball.
But I’ve been playing 30 years, and I’ll tell you straight — going on the range, and taking wedge through driver and hitting 10 straight (let alone perfect) shots in a row with each club? That’s something I have yet to achieve - a different tier - and Rory can probably do that.
And that’s okay. I'll never be remotely as good as Rory at golf (on his worst round probably), in this lifetime.
Because golf — like anything — is personal.
And that’s the point most people miss.
What works for Rory doesn’t have to work for you.
There’s this idea that “elite” means one specific way. Maybe that’s the standard at the highest level…
Some players need reps before the shot.
Some trust feel.
Some trust routine.
Bubba Watson apparently doesn't believe in lessons or golf coaches - he just wants his own natural intuition of a swing and what feels right.
The goal isn’t to copy greatness. Everybody's different.
It’s to understand yourself well enough to create your own version of it.
Do what lets you step over the ball with confidence. Which may mean zero practice swings. When speaking of etiquette that's most appropriate.
But approach your game, your business, your relationship the best way you can and what feels right, pure, and natural to you.
That’s the real edge.
